Retractable louvered shade structure over a brick patio with dining furniture

Shade On Demand

Retractable Shade Structures

Fixed shade is a decision you make once. Retractable shade is a decision you make every afternoon.

A permanent canopy is the right call over a pool or a playground, where you want shade every hour the space is used. It is the wrong call over a patio you use in April and October, when the thing you actually want at 10am is sun and the thing you want at 4pm is shade.

What retractable means here

Two different products get called retractable shade, and they behave differently.

A retractable fabric canopy runs on a track or cable system. The fabric gathers to one end and the frame stays up year round. It is lighter, cheaper, and the fabric comes down for winter.

A louvered or adjustable structure has a fixed roof of rotating blades. It does not gather away, but it opens and closes to change how much sun comes through, and closed it sheds rain.

Choosing between retractable and fixed

  • Shade wanted every day the space is used, no exceptions: fixed sail or hip canopy is cheaper and simpler
  • A patio that catches hard afternoon sun but is pleasant in the morning: retractable earns its cost
  • A space where you want the winter sun to reach the house: retractable, without question
  • Any structure that needs to shed rain rather than just block sun: louvered

The point people miss about winter

In Northwest Arkansas, a fixed canopy on the south side of a house is working against you from November to March. Low winter sun is free heat on the wall and through the glass, and a permanent structure blocks it every day. Retractable shade lets you take it back. Over a few seasons that is a real difference in how the adjacent rooms feel, not just how the patio feels.

Motorized operation

We install motorized systems the same way we do our screens and awnings, with remote and smart-home control, so retracting is a button rather than a chore. A shade that takes effort to move is a shade that stops getting moved.

If your goal is really sun control on an opening rather than overhead shade, look at UV solar shades or motorized retractable awnings instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is retractable shade worth the extra cost over a fixed sail?

It depends on how you use the space. For a pool or playground shaded every day, fixed is cheaper and simpler. For a patio that is pleasant in the morning and brutal at 4pm, retractable is worth it.

Can retractable shade structures handle rain?

A louvered structure closes to shed rain. A retractable fabric canopy is a sun product, not a roof, and should be retracted in weather.

Do they work with smart home systems?

Yes. Motorized systems get remote and app control, and integrate with Alexa and Google Home the same as our motorized screens.

What happens in winter?

That is the main argument for retractable. Fixed shade on a south-facing wall blocks free winter heat every day. Retracting it lets the low sun back onto the house.
